The resolution, passed by the township committee earlier this month, calls on federal lawmakers representing New Jersey to push for an end to immigrant detention, with an emphasis on reuniting families that have been split up.
In some cases, people who have lived for decades in the United States and raised families here have been separated from their spouses and children.
The committee was approached by Afsheen Shamsi, of Princeton, with a draft of the resolution asking if Montgomery would consider taking formal action on the subject, Mayor Sadaf Jaffer told NJ.com.
Montgomery is the first New Jersey town to pass such a resolution. Shamsi is spearheading an effort to get Flemington, Jersey City and Princeton to pass similar resolutions, and eventually would like to see at least 100 towns in New Jersey pass their own versions.
